Following is a list of some of the many benefits, programs and services that makes Maxygen a great place to work.

Financial

  • Competitive base salaries -- We pay close attention to market data in order to ensure that our employees are compensated competitively for their work.

  • Bonus program - We want strong performers - smart, committed, self-motivated employees who are passionate about what they do and who work well as members of our dynamic team. All Maxygen employees are eligible for year-end bonuses that are awarded according to performance against pre-determined goals.

  • Stock options -- Maxygen offers every regular, full-time employee a stock option package. We review options annually and make periodic additional grants to reward promotions and long-term performance.

  • 401K - Employees may defer up to 75 percent of their pay (up to limits set by the Internal Revenue Service) and Maxygen will match, in Maxygen stock, 50 percent of the employee's cash contribution up to a maximum of 6% of their annual salary .

  • Spot awards - This program encourages managers to reward employees with a cash bonus for significant accomplishments based on innovation, effort and impact of results.

  • ESPP - Our Employee Stock Purchase Plan allows employees to allocate up to 15 percent of their pay to purchase Maxygen stock at a 15 percent discount to fair market value.

  • Financial planning services -- Our EAP service provider offers private, unbiased financial information and counseling at no cost to Maxygen employees.

  • Employee referral program -- One of the best sources for finding new employees is our own hardworking crew. Maxygen pays $500 to any employee who refers an individual whom we hire.

Community

  • Volunteer days -- We believe that our products will make the world a better place - and that our people will too. Maxygen is a charter member of the Entrepreneurs Foundation (EF), a not-for-profit organization that involves local corporations in the reinvigoration of communities in the Bay Area. Maxygen employees are eligible for up to two days off per year to participate in EF philanthropic activities. In addition, each employee is entitled to one day each year of paid time off to serve the charitable or community organization of his or her choice.

  • Events -- Maxygen employees have participated as a group in a variety of community service projects including building homes with Habitat for Humanity, planting trees in our Redwood City community and running in the Race for the Cure.

  • MaxyHour -- Maxygen hosts an informal gathering called MaxyHour each Friday afternoon.  Employees are encouraged to gather and socialize while enjoying food and beverages supplied by the Company. 

  • Annual Company Events, Outings & Celebrations -- are held in honor of corporate milestones.

  • Sports -- Maxygen sponsors employee competitions in table tennis, pool, etc.

Family/Childcare

  • Emergency/Back-Up Childcare -- Our local provider, Bright Horizons, is available when our employee may need childcare assistance on a temporary basis when the permanent caregiver is unavailable.

  • Elder Care -- Through our EAP provider, experts on aging are available to assist families in arranging care for elder family members.

Education and Training

  • Tuition Reimbursement -- Maxygen employees are immediately eligible upon hire for tuition reimbursement of up to $3,000 annually for job-related education.

  • Computer Training Courses -- A variety of on-site courses are offered on a regular basis .

Heath & Fitness

  • Medical and Dental Plans -- We offer several options for health insurance, including both HMO and PPO providers with convenient locations throughout the Bay Area. We also have comprehensive dental and vision plans. We require a modest contribution towards an employee’s individual and their dependent’s coverage .

  • Flex Plan -- A voluntary program where employees may use pre-tax dollars to pay for certain expenses, such as healthcare or dependent care, that are not covered by other benefit programs.

  • Group Life and AD&D Insurance -- plans are effective upon hire.

  • Health Club Reimbursement -- Maxygen pays $385 annually towards fitness reimbursement in support of an employee’s healthy lifestyle .

  • On-site workout room -- Maxygen's headquarters is located in an office park with a small, shared gym that our employees may use.

  • Subsidized Lunch Program -- as well as free fruit, breakfast items, snacks, coffee/tea and espresso.

  • Ergonomics -- Specialists are available to evaluate employees' workstation and provide tools and equipment to ensure the workspaces are ergonomically correct.

  • Flu Shots -- Offered annually free of charge to employees .

Vacations/Time Off

  • Flexible Time Off -- New employees are entitled to 20 days of flexible time off (combined vacation and sick days) annually to use as they wish. After five years of service, FTO increases to 25 days per year.

  • Disability -- Short & long term options available.

  • Holidays -- Maxygen employees are entitled to 11 company-sponsored holidays per year.  

Transportation Services

  • Commuter Voucher Program -- Maxygen covers 75 percent of employee's travel on mass transit.

  • Free Shuttle -- Available to and from the local Caltrain Station.

  • Bike Lockers -- Available for those employees who bike to work.

Other Benefits & Employee Perks

  • Concierge Service -- Working hard means that sometimes it's difficult to have the time to get clothes dry-cleaned, shoes repaired or film developed. Our "concierge" provider will pick up and drop off these items for our employees at competitive rates.

  • Credit Union Membership -- Maxygen employees are eligible to join Provident Credit Union .

  • Notary Services -- Several notary publics are available on site.
